Feb. 9, 2016 –Wake Forest foot-care retailer Sole Dimensions recently donated 195 brand new pairs of shoes to Note in the Pocket, a Wake County non-profit that provides clothing to homeless and impoverished school-aged children.
The donation consisted of mostly athletic shoes and sneakers in a wide range of sizes, including children’s, women’s and men’s. A few sandals and dressier shoes were also donated and all of the footwear will be given to local students in need.
“We believe it’s unacceptable that children are limited in their educational and social development because they don’t have appropriate clothes or shoes for school,” said Dallas Bonavita, Note in the Pocket executive director.
“More than 52,000 students in the Wake County School System are living below the poverty line, and many of these children are wearing shoes that don’t fit well or are falling apart,” she added. “With a big donation like this, we’re able to quickly provide comfortable, properly-sized shoes to students who desperately need them.”
Sole Dimensions, which sells athletic, casual and dress footwear, as well as shoe accessories, made the donation to make room for new inventory.
“It’s great knowing that 195 kids will go to school wearing new shoes that are similar to their peers,” said Certified Pedorthist Ellie Penner, who owns and operates Sole Dimensions in Wake Forest. “New shoes can help increase a child’s physical activity, build their confidence and help them better concentrate on their school work because they fit in,” Penner said.
Note in the Pocket accepts season- and school-appropriate clothes and shoe donations and supplies clothing to students year-round. It collects incoming donations and processes outgoing orders at its volunteer center located at 5100 Lacy Avenue in Raleigh. The non-profit places a note that says, “You are loved” in every package of clothing they deliver to students.
